Rounds 1 & 2 of the 2016 CAMSO V8 Late Model Series took place on a cold and sometimes wet Easter weekend at Warneton Speedway in Belgium. Warneton Speedway is a 1/4 mile oval located on the border between Belgium and France and promotes close, exciting racing.
The series is run to the same rules as the Late Model series in North America which is seen as a stepping stone to the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series. Racing for the UK based team Race Car Direct, South African born driver Arnout Kok hopes to compete in the full season driving the #8 Wild West Jerky sponsored car.
Round 1 took place on the 27 March and consisted of two heats and a final. With 9 drivers entered we decided to run on old tyres which in hindsight was a mistake. The circuit was still dirty from the winter break and with old tyres we struggled to be competitive with a 9th in heat one, 8th in heat two and 7th in the final.
For round 2 we put two new tyres on the car and the handling was transformed. From trailing around at back in round 1 we were able to lead laps in both heats as well as the final, with a best result of 6th in heat 2. A spin in the final deprived us of another top 6 finish however it was great to have a competitive car in only my second full CAMSO V8 meeting.
The next round of the series takes place on the 17th April and we will be testing a new suspension set up in order to improve the cars.
A massive “Thanks” to Wild West Jerky for their support in 2016 and we look forward to promoting their brand this season.
