Beef biltong – a healthy protein source

When we think of protein, we often think of fish, beans, meat, lentils and yoghurt are at the top of the list. This is true, but have you ever stopped to consider a different type of protein source that is high in protein, rich in goodness, low in carbohydrates and as tasty as all of the above? One such protein source is biltong.

What is protein?

Proteins are molecules which are large in size. Once consumed through various food groups, the amino acids in these molecules react in the body by helping strengthen muscle, hair and nails. Proteins play a crucial role in the development of both a child and an adult’s body as they help to develop and repair organs as well as tissues.

How is protein good for me?

Protein works well to ensure that all the organs of your body, both internally as well as externally, are functioning at optimum level. They are the builders and repairers of the human body, helping us develop resistance to sickness by strengthening us.

General wellbeing benefits include those of a person’s internal organs. Protein helps to maintain as well as repair organ and tissue damage and keep them functioning at optimum levels. The way protein works is as such – if for example you were to consume a bag of beef biltong, the protein in this biltong (once broken down) will help to create enzymes, hormones and other bodily chemicals. These in turn, assist with the functioning of the main organs.

Our bodies are made up of bone, muscle, skin, blood and cartilage and protein is the main contributing factor that ensures the preservation and functioning of all of them. Without any of these performing the way they should be, you body will slowly start to shut down.

How much should I consume per day?

According to Gunnars (2015), the average man requires 56-91 grams of protein per day, while the average woman needs to consume at least 46-75 grams of protein per day. Normally a food item such as a large egg would be 46 grams, but will only contain 6 grams of protein.

When it comes to Cruga biltong, this is another story! Our biltong has 50% protein per serving, which means for every 25 grams you consume, there is 12.5 grams of protein intake. This makes it the ideal protein snack as you are sure to get the maximum amount, without being compromised by other harmful nutrients such as fat.

If you would like to get the best out of life and enjoy a healthy, balanced diet you should consider eating Cruga biltong. The great taste and better yet, the high nutritional value, will be a sure hit in your household, whether it be a snack for your child’s lunchbox or a supplement for your diet.
