The results are in and we’ve won a 1 star Great Taste Award for our Cruga Original Biltong.
The biltong was awarded a 1-star Great Taste award, which means the judges dubbed it simply delicious and they said ‘A nicely even cut which has a very good chew and a delicate spicing. The balance works well with meat. Simple but effective with good, even-sized small pieces of biltong. We like the size as it would make them easy to snack on.’
Judged by over 500 of the most demanding palates, belonging to food critics, chefs, cooks, restaurateurs and producers, as well as a whole host of food writers and journalists, Great Taste is widely acknowledged as the most respected food accreditation scheme for artisan and speciality food producers. As well as a badge of honour, the unmistakeable black and gold Great Taste label is a signpost to a wonderful tasting product, which has been discovered through hours and hours of blind-tasting by hundreds of judges.
We entered our biltong to recognise that it is made using beef silverside, that is mainly sourced from the UK and Ireland, it is then prepared by hand and rubbed in a marinade of store cupboard spices. The silverside is then hung and air-dried in our unique drying room to create the biltong. Each strip of beef is hand picked before being sliced and packed making this a real artisanal product.
Our biltong is created using an authentic South African recipe that was brought to the UK by the founder of Cruga who is still involved in the making the biltong.
