Heather Geluk sent us an update of her latest fundraising activity for Carneys Community.
“I wanted to share some pictures and a short update from the Dragon Boat Race which I participated in with my boxing club (Power of Boxing) to raise money for a charity called Carneys Community. 18 of us came together on Sunday to participate in the race (without any previous experience!) and placed 3rd out of 52 teams – including some pro-teams!! An amazing result with a bronze medal finish given that until Sunday many on the team had never even held a paddle before! I brought along a bunch of the samples which you regularly kindly send to me and the samples were DEVOURED in minutes – it was incredible to see such a positive reaction and I remain convinced that Meatsnacks Group fueled our 3rd place finish!!”
The Dragon Boat team was made up of friends who regularly raise money for Carneys through various events and sports activities – boxing bouts, social evenings etc. They all meet regularly to box together between the Fitzroy Lodge and the Carneys Battersea gym — it’s a great form of training and their membership goes towards the running of the charity. Their group is called, The Power of Boxing (http://www.powerofboxing.com/).

More about “Carney’s Community is a charity which aims to reduce offending, re-offending and anti-social behaviour, whilst improving social mobility and community cohesion. They achieve this by engaging a variety of young people, but with a focus on the most disadvantaged and excluded, in boxing fitness sessions, whilst offering intensive, one-to-one mentoring and then the opportunity for them to qualify as sports coaches and/ or personal trainers. They believe that by empowering young people through mentoring, participation, focusing on their strengths and learning from each other, they can improve not only their opportunities, but also those of their local communities. ” (http://carneyscommunity.org/)
