Here at Wild West, we often talk about the health benefits of eating jerky as a post-workout snack. It’s high in protein, low in calories, fat and carbs. But we understand that health isn’t the pinnacle of everyone’s snacking experience. Sometimes you just want to put your feet up and crack open a nice cold beer with your favourite snack.
We have some good news for you; jerky and beer are truly a match made in Heaven. The smoky, spicy flavour of jerky compliments the taste of beer and makes for a delicious combination. Cheese and wine are so out!
To provide you with an honest blog, some of us at Wild West HQ went along to the Cairngorm Brewery to taste test beer and jerky (best day at work ever). Here is what we found:
We joined visitors at the end of the brewery tour and gave them salmon jerky to sample. We found that the salmon jerky went down well with lighter beers such as Trade Winds and White Lady.
Trade Winds tasting notes say ‘Light golden in colour, with a high proportion of wheat giving the beer a clean fresh taste. The mash blends together with the perle hops and elderflower providing a bouquet of fruit and citrus flavours.’ The team at Cairngorm Brewery also agreed that this beer goes well with lighter meats, perfect for salmon.
The White Lady tasting notes say ‘A Bavarian Style Crystal Wheat Beer, with additional hints of roast malt for colour – brewed with Orange Peel and Coriander to give fruit flavours with a hint of spice.’ This combined with the gentle taste of salmon jerky was a winner with the brewery visitors.
If you prefer a darker beer, then beef jerky is the way to go. The two dark beers that went best with our beef jerky were Black Gold and Stag.
Black Gold tasting notes say ‘This wholesome stout has a rich dark colour and nutty roast flavour. No less than four colours of malt make up the grist! A smooth sweetness leads to a dry finish and a satisfying after taste’. It is said that Black Gold goes well with a Sunday roast, and it went down a treat with our beef jerky. We thought it went particularly well with more peppery or chilli-based flavours.
The Stag beer tasting notes say ‘A mahogany coloured ale with medium to light body. Challenger and Fuggles hops are added plentifully giving initial bitterness that is then balanced by a caramel finish from the roast malts’. Some of the tour visitors thought that the beef jerky paired well with this beer, and the hoppy flavour complimented the spicier flavoured jerkies.
